Malta Publicly Opposes EU's Centralized Crypto Regulation Plan

Deep Tide TechFlow reports, on April 1, according to Bloomberg, the smallest EU member state, Malta, is openly opposing a proposal to centralize cryptocurrency regulatory authority under the Paris-based European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). If the EU Council and European Parliament advance this proposal—supporters expect the process to move forward as early as this summer—Malta would be forced to relinquish direct regulatory control over crypto institutions like Crypto.com and Gemini. Malta has long attracted numerous crypto companies with its relaxed regulatory environment, earning the nickname "Blockchain Island." The country is currently engaged in a public confrontation with the EU over the issue of centralized regulation, adopting a stance that markedly differs from the diplomatic mediation typically employed by EU member states in financial regulatory disputes.
