Is Bitcoin about to be broken by quantum attacks soon?
Google's report today has stirred up a storm, but personally, I think it's being interpreted too emotionally.
Google isn’t saying, 'Tomorrow quantum computers will break all cryptocurrencies.' What they’re saying is: based on their latest resource estimates, the day when existing public-key cryptography systems are threatened might be closer than many previously thought. So, the entire industry should start migrating to quantum-resistant cryptography now.
I do think this is a topic worth deep consideration and one of the core issues the Bitcoin community should focus on.
Bitcoin’s slow upgrade process is both an advantage and a disadvantage, but with soft forks, introducing quantum signatures (like lattice-based Dilithium, hash-based XMSS, and other NIST standards) is technically feasible.
The community is already discussing similar BIPs, so there’s actually time to complete these preventative measures.
Google’s report itself also states that the remaining time is still greater than the time needed for migration—it’s just that the window is narrowing.
Also, speaking of companies like Project Eleven, of course, they want everyone to panic now because they’re selling post-quantum wallets/protocol solutions.
