Interesting, is OpenAI starting to sell ads now? Over $10 million in 6 weeks.
I checked out the advertisers placing ads with OpenAI,
mainly brought in by the big three U.S. agencies,
like Adobe, AP watches, Ford Motors—pretty diverse lineup.
The minimum ad spend starts at $200,000, and some clients are asked to spend $250,000.
They charge based on CPM,
for example, $60 CPM, meaning $60 for every 1,000 ad impressions.
This rate is three times more expensive than Meta.
Even though it costs three times as much, OpenAI is pretty bossy about it.
They only provide impression and click numbers—no conversion tracking, no user profiling.
Selling just over $10 million in 6 weeks is honestly a bit underwhelming.
But apparently, OpenAI is intentionally limiting the volume.
They’re only targeting 5% of mobile users, which means many advertisers can’t even spend their $200K budgets by the end of the month.
Of course, OpenAI doesn’t really need this money.
Just from subscriptions and APIs, their annual revenue is already in the $25 billion range.
OpenAI running ads is a short-term boost for their IPO valuation.
Personally, I think there’s no right or wrong when it comes to commercialization.
OpenAI just chose a faster path to monetization and earlier profitability.
The key will be how the management balances content and ads moving forward.
Just don’t end up like Baidu, that’s all.
