Senator Warner proposes taxing data centers to address the employment impact caused by AI
On March 26th, according to TechCrunch, US Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) proposed taxing data centers that drive the development of AI and using the related taxes to support workers impacted by AI, including funding nurse training, AI skill enhancement projects, etc., to ensure that communities benefit effectively from data center construction. In terms of background, entry-level job recruitment in the United States has decreased by 35% since 2023, with several law firms and technology companies cutting recruitment due to the ability of AI to handle entry-level jobs. Warner stated that the unemployment panic caused by AI is "obvious", and the public's resistance to data centers is also continuing to heat up - the latest poll shows that 46% of voters have a negative view of AI, and there is even a proposal to abolish data center tax incentives in Virginia. Warner explicitly opposes the "data center suspension" bill proposed by Senator Sanders and Congressman Ocasio Cortes, believing that it will give China an advantage in the AI competition, but emphasizing that the data center industry has an obligation to "pay the bill" for community transformation. At present, the relevant legislation has not been formally submitted.
