[Iran Once Again Accused of Demanding $2 Million 'Transit Fee' Per Passage]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on March 24, sources revealed that Iran has begun charging transit fees for certain commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This further underscores Iran's control over one of the world's most critical maritime energy corridors. Sources stated that Iran is temporarily demanding fees of up to $2 million per passage, effectively setting up informal checkpoints in the waterway. However, Iranian officials have previously denied such claims (the Iranian Embassy in India posted on social media on the 23rd local time, stating that the claims about Iran charging $2 million from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz are 'baseless').
Although the specific mechanisms, including the payment currency, remain unclear and this move does not appear to be a systematic operation, some vessels have reportedly paid the fees. This demonstrates Iran's actual control over the Strait of Hormuz. Typically, about one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas, along with significant amounts of grain, metals, and other goods, pass through this strait daily. As the Middle East conflict enters its fourth week, this highlights the urgent need for some consumers to ensure the continuous flow of energy. (Jin10)
