On March 23rd, the US House Financial Services Committee will review tokenization issues, with a focus on requiring the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to jointly study tokenized securities and derivatives, as well as allowing some regulated agencies to use blockchain based records under future SEC rules. In January of this year, the SEC stated that tokenized stocks and bonds would still be subject to current securities laws. Earlier this month, the SEC expanded its regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, clarifying that tokenized securities fall within its regulatory scope. Last week, the SEC and CFTC reached a coordination agreement to promote regulatory synergy.
