[a16z Crypto: Agentic AI May End the Current Internet Advertising Model]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on March 23, a16z Crypto stated that business models driven by autonomous AI agents could potentially bring an end to the online advertising model as we know it today and reshape the economic framework of the internet.
Since the advent of the internet, purchasing goods or services has typically required users to visit online stores (some of which are driven by advertising traffic). However, Sam Ragsdale, co-founder of Merit Systems, believes this model could change if AI agents handle shopping on behalf of users in the future.
In an article published on the a16z blog on Sunday, Ragsdale noted that from 1997 to 2024, the internet's business model has been centered around "diverting attention." He explained: "Humans are distracted by ads while browsing web pages, enabling traffic monetization; however, large language models (LLMs) and AI agents are not susceptible to such distractions."
According to data from Mordor Intelligence, the online advertising market is projected to reach $291 billion by 2025, with search giant Google dominating the sector.
He further remarked: "Advertising created a free and open internet, which in turn became a dataset of 10 trillion tokens, ultimately giving rise to large language models that may ironically lead to the decline of advertising. There’s a certain poetic irony in this.
