[Lunar Mission Landscape Undergoes Major Shift: NASA Plans to Replace Boeing's Core Role with SpaceX]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on March 20, insiders revealed that NASA is revising its lunar mission plans, reducing Boeing's involvement while elevating the role of SpaceX's Starship rocket to carry out the task of transporting astronauts to lunar orbit.
Under the original plan formulated years ago, Boeing's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket was to carry four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, to the Moon. The spacecraft would then independently enter lunar orbit. At that point, a Starship lander would rendezvous and dock with the spacecraft near the Moon, subsequently transporting the astronauts to the lunar surface.
Under the new plan, the SLS will no longer be responsible for propelling the Orion spacecraft to lunar orbit—a task that was once a critical mission for the rocket. Instead, Starship and Orion will dock in Earth's orbit, with Starship taking on the key responsibility of pushing the spacecraft to lunar orbit and then delivering the astronauts to the Moon's surface.
