[California Court Rejects Coinbase User's Objection to IRS Summons]
Reported by Golden Finance, on March 19, a California court on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Coinbase user attempting to block the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) from obtaining their financial records. This marks at least the second similar case in the past year that failed to proceed to trial.
Roger Metz filed a motion in May 2025 in the Northern District of California to quash the IRS summons, which requested Coinbase to provide financial records related to the audit of his 2022 federal tax filings.
His attorney argued that the summons violated privacy rights, was overly broad, and failed to meet basic administrative requirements. Metz's attorney also pointed out that by the time the IRS issued the summons in 2024, Metz had already independently identified the errors, submitted corrected tax returns, and paid the additional taxes owed.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín ruled against Metz on Wednesday, stating that he failed to notify the relevant government officials within the required 90-day period, leading to the case being dismissed on procedural grounds.
