[California Court Dismisses Coinbase User's Objection to IRS Summons]
According to Cointelegraph, a federal judge in the Northern District of California has dismissed Coinbase user Roger Metz's request to quash an IRS summons. Metz filed the request in May 2025, seeking to block the IRS from requiring Coinbase to provide financial records related to his 2022 tax filings. His attorney argued that the summons violated privacy rights, was overly broad, and failed to meet basic administrative requirements. The judge ruled that Metz did not formally notify the U.S. Attorney General of the request within the required 90-day period, constituting insufficient procedural service, and thus dismissed the request. The dismissal is classified as "without prejudice to substantive rights," meaning Metz may refile the request in the future. In a similar case last year, James Harper accused the IRS of violating Fourth Amendment rights by obtaining his data from exchanges through a John Doe summons, but the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.
