Hong Kong police's' Thunder Drum 'operation uncovered cryptocurrency loan fraud case, 6 people arrested, involving approximately HKD 5 million On March 18th, according to the Hong Kong Business Daily, the Hong Kong police launched a code named "Thunder Drum" operation targeting a fraud group that collects deposits in cryptocurrency under the guise of low interest loans. Within two days, three men and three women (aged between 29 and 63) were arrested in various districts of Hong Kong on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud. Some of the suspects have triad backgrounds, and the operation is still ongoing. Since November 2025, the fraud group has been impersonating bank employees through random phone calls to promote low interest loans, luring victims to sign contracts in a fake office rented in the name of a shell company in Central, and demanding a deposit as proof of assets. Scammers' payment methods include cash, bank transfers to puppet accounts, and cryptocurrency payments, with cryptocurrency mainly targeting older or less tech savvy individuals. There are a total of 13 victims involved in the case, with diverse backgrounds, some of whom hold college or master's degrees, including businessmen and company owners, resulting in a total loss of approximately HKD 5 million. The police seized multiple documents and computer evidence at the scene.
