[Bitrefill Discloses Suspected North Korean Hacker Attack in Early March, Systems Shut Down for Isolation]
Odaily Planet Daily News: Bitcoin payment service provider Bitrefill disclosed in a post on the X platform that it suffered a cyberattack on March 1, 2026. The attack originated from a compromised laptop belonging to an employee, leading to unauthorized access to parts of its database and cryptocurrency wallets. Investigations revealed that the attack methods closely resemble those used by the North Korean DPRK Lazarus/Bluenoroff hacker group in previous attacks targeting crypto companies. Approximately 18,500 purchase records involving limited customer information (email addresses, crypto payment addresses, and IP metadata) were affected, with around 1,000 records containing encrypted customer name information that may have been accessed. Bitrefill stated that customers do not need to take any special actions but advised vigilance against abnormal communications. Bitrefill added that it has shut down the affected systems for isolation and is collaborating with security experts, on-chain analysts, and law enforcement agencies. Operations have almost fully returned to normal. The company emphasized that it remains profitable in the long term and financially robust, capable of absorbing the losses from this incident. Bitrefill also committed to further strengthening cybersecurity measures, including internal access controls, monitoring, and emergency response mechanisms.
