In the past two years, two tech giants have been catching up in the AI race after falling behind. Here's what Google has been doing:
1) First, they restructured by forcibly merging Google Brain and DeepMind into Google DeepMind, with Demis Hassabis taking full charge;
2) The founders returned, personally overseeing operations and even writing code;
3) They rebranded, unifying all AI product lines under the Gemini brand to concentrate research efforts;
4) High-frequency iterations, with crazy updates in 2024-25, visibly improving model capabilities;
5) All product lines fully embracing AI.
Finally, in November last year, the Gemini 3 series was launched, marking Google’s true comeback in the AI battlefield.
What’s Meta doing?
Crazy acquisitions. Mid-last year, they acquired Scale AI, bringing its founder Alexandr Wang onboard to fully lead AI efforts, followed by major internal turmoil during team integration;
They acquired Manus, then Moltbook;
It’s clear that Zuck is feeling anxious, but it’s also evident that he has a strong dependency on acquisition strategies—after all, Instagram and WhatsApp, two of Meta’s foundational businesses, were acquired.
The problem with pushing too hard is that Llama 4 is still lagging far behind other leading models, and even its influence in the open-source space doesn’t compare to Qianwen (though the recent resignation of Qianwen’s lead is a self-inflicted setback).
