[U.S. Federal Court Dismisses Terrorism-Related Lawsuit Against Binance and CZ]
Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on March 7, according to Reuters, U.S. Manhattan federal judge Jeannette Vargas dismissed a civil lawsuit attempting to hold Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) accountable for allegedly facilitating global terrorist attacks through their trading activities. The judge ruled that the 535 plaintiffs (including victims and their families) failed to reasonably demonstrate that the defendants 'intentionally colluded with, participated in, or ensured the success of the attacks through their actions.'
The plaintiffs alleged that the attacks, which occurred between 2017 and 2024, were carried out by external terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, ISIS, Kata'ib Hezbollah, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Al-Qaeda. They sought to attribute responsibility to Binance and Changpeng Zhao for transactions involving hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency and dealings with Iranian users.
The judge noted that while Binance and Changpeng Zhao may have been aware of the potential for their exchange to be used for terrorist financing, their connection to the terrorist organizations was limited to 'accounts held by them or their affiliates on Binance, conducting transactions in a fair and lawful manner.'
The judge also criticized the plaintiffs' 891-page, 3,189-paragraph complaint as 'entirely unnecessary' but allowed them the opportunity to amend it.
A Binance spokesperson stated: 'The court correctly dismissed these baseless allegations. Binance strictly adheres to compliance requirements and has zero tolerance for illegal activities on its platform.'
