[Canadian Resident Falls Victim to Cryptocurrency Scam, Fraudsters Impersonate RCMP for Secondary Fraud]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that a resident of Nanaimo, Canada, was scammed late last year after receiving a text message promoting remote stock trading jobs. The victim deposited approximately CAD 5,000 (around USD 3,600) via a cryptocurrency ATM. Earlier this year, the victim came across an online message disguised as an RCMP announcement, encouraging fraud victims to report their cases. After submitting a form, the victim received a call from someone claiming to be a lawyer, stating that two cryptocurrency accounts related to the victim had been found and offering to help recover approximately USD 60,000 in so-called profits.
Nanaimo RCMP media relations officer Gary O'Brien stated that the RCMP does not contact individuals about discovered cryptocurrency accounts, does not collaborate with private companies to recover lost funds, and does not request any form of payment to investigate fraud.
Andy Zhou, co-founder and CEO of blockchain security company BlockSec, explained that this type of scheme is known as a 'fake recovery service scam' and is characterized by systematic features. Fraudsters often possess information about victims collected during the initial scam. Organized fraud groups circulate lists of victims who have previously sent money, making them targets for secondary scams. The impersonation of law enforcement agency brands is effective because it exploits the psychological mechanism of 'authority bias.'
Since 2022, Canadian police have been conducting cryptocurrency investigation training.
