**[Anthropic: Will Legally Challenge Any Supply Chain Risk Designation]**
Foresight News reports that artificial intelligence company Anthropic has issued a statement saying, "We previously submitted two exemption requests regarding the lawful use of our AI model Claude: prohibiting large-scale domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens and banning fully autonomous weapon systems. To date, we have not received direct communication from the Department of Defense or the White House regarding the progress of negotiations. Our insistence on these exemptions is based on two considerations: first, cutting-edge AI models at this stage lack the reliability required for fully autonomous weapons, and such applications would endanger U.S. military personnel and civilian safety; second, large-scale domestic surveillance constitutes a violation of fundamental human rights.
The Department of Defense's designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk is unprecedented. We are deeply saddened by this decision. Since June 2024, Anthropic has consistently supported U.S. military personnel and remains committed to continuing this service. We believe this designation is legally unfounded and sets a dangerous precedent for any U.S. company negotiating with the government. No matter what deterrence or penalties the Department of Defense imposes, it will not change our stance on large-scale domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. We will legally challenge any supply chain risk designation."
Previously, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth tweeted that he is directing the Department of Defense to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk entity.
