Base announced that it will break away from the OP ecosystem and build its own independent L2. Currently, Base pays OP around $2 million annually in fee-sharing, so OP just lost a major taxpayer. However, according to Base's announcement, the main reason for the migration is to reduce external dependencies, allowing them to upgrade and iterate more quickly and flexibly. Right now, Base is limited to only 3 upgrades per year due to OP's restrictions, but after going independent, they can perform 6 smaller, faster upgrades annually, reducing the scope and risks of each upgrade. And Base’s ambitions are huge and bold. As an L2, they’re acting like a rebel challenging the status quo. In the announcement, they even said they will “guide the development of Ethereum’s roadmap.” @VitalikButerin, can you tolerate this? Base mentioned that they will release a series of new features ahead of Ethereum, the most notable being EIP-7928, which enables reliable parallel execution—currently Ethereum’s biggest bottleneck. Oh, and one more thing: throughout the announcement, Base never referred to itself as an L2 but rather as a standalone ecosystem. In a way, it’s not impossible that Base might eventually break away from Ethereum and become an L1 in the future. https://blog.base.dev/next-chapter-for-base-chain-1
