[Head of U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division Resigns]
Jin10 News, February 13 – Abigail Slater, head of the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division, resigned on Thursday, raising questions about how the Trump administration will handle competition policy in the future. Slater announced her resignation on X, following a request from the White House for her to step down. When Trump nominated Slater for the position last December, it was widely seen as a signal that the second Trump administration would continue the proactive antitrust enforcement strategy adopted by the Biden team.
The resignation comes amid internal disagreements within the Department of Justice over merger enforcement. Last month, despite recommendations from Slater and antitrust attorneys at the Department of Justice to conduct a thorough review of Compass's acquisition of its largest competitor, Anywhere Real Estate, the department approved the deal. Previously, disputes surrounding Hewlett Packard Enterprise's acquisition of Juniper Networks had led to the dismissal of two of Slater's senior deputies by top DOJ officials. The Antitrust Division is also reviewing the ongoing battle between Netflix and Paramount Global over the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
