Has the Trump tariff war been stopped? Yesterday, the House of Representatives of the United States Congress voted 219 in favor of 211 against the vote to prevent Trump from imposing tariffs on Canada. It was said that Trump's tariff war was called off. In fact, it's not like that. The phrase 'being stopped' is a bit of a clickbait.
First of all, at present, only the House of Representatives has to send a resolution to the Senate. Although the Senate will probably pass it (similar resolutions have been passed twice before), Trump has veto power on the bill, and he will almost certainly veto it.
Secondly, if Trump vetoes, it is almost impossible to be overthrown. To overturn the presidential veto, a two-thirds majority vote is required in both houses of Congress. At present, the gap in seats between the two parties is very small and cannot be achieved at all. So this vote is essentially a symbolic statement, with almost no impact on the actual tariff policy. The tariffs are still being imposed.
Finally, it's not that the tariff war has been halted
This is only a tariff for Canada (25%, 10% for energy products), citing the so-called 'fentanyl/border emergency'. Trump's tariff policy also involves Mexico, China, the European Union and other countries, and this resolution does not involve other countries at all.
Describing a symbolic House vote against Canada as' Trump's tariff war finally halted 'is somewhat exaggerated.
