The seller purchased the domain name (AI. com) for only $100 in 1993, solely because "AI" happened to be the abbreviation of the name
According to Malaymail, Malaysian tech entrepreneur Arsyan Ismail sold the top-level domain (AI. com) for a staggering $70 million (approximately RM300 million) in April 2025, reportedly to Kris Marszalek, co-founder and CEO of (Crypto. com). The domain name was previously listed for $100 million, and the final transaction price made it one of the highest publicly disclosed domain name transactions in history.
The seeds of this huge wealth were planted 32 years ago. In 1993, Arsyan, who was only 10 years old, registered the domain using his mother's credit card for only $100. He did not foresee the prosperity of artificial intelligence today at that time, and the reason for purchasing was simply because "AI" happened to be the acronym of his name. This seemingly inexplicable $100 deduction at the time even left his mother, who knew nothing about the domain name, confused.
As a technology veteran with more than 30 years of experience, Arsyan participated in early Internet projects such as Friendster and was also an early adopter of Bitcoin. Looking back at this life changing transaction, his advice is: when negotiating with ultra-high net worth individuals, do not overthink or attempt to "induce" the other party, in order to avoid missing the opportunity to close the deal due to small mistakes or big mistakes.
