[New York Fed Survey: U.S. Consumer Inflation Expectations Slightly Improved in January]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, a New York Fed survey shows that U.S. consumers' expectations for inflation and the job market slightly improved in January. The median expectation for inflation over the next year is 3.1%, down from 3.4% in December. Consumers believe the probability of losing their jobs has slightly decreased, while the probability of finding a new job within three months has risen to about 46%. Signs of stabilization in the labor market created conditions for the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged last month, following three consecutive rate cuts by the Fed through the end of 2025. Policymakers stated that these rate cuts would support the labor market while keeping rates high enough to continue exerting downward pressure on inflation. Households' views on their financial situation over the next year are roughly divided, with half of respondents believing it will improve and the other half believing it will worsen. Inflation expectations for the next three and five years remain unchanged at 3%.
