[Caixin: Beijing man sentenced to 3 years and 10 months for involvement in U.S. 'pig-butchering scam' money laundering, ordered to pay 187 million yuan in compensation.]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Beijing resident Su Jingliang was sentenced to 46 months in prison for participating in a 'pig-butchering scam' involving money laundering of over $36.9 million (approximately 256 million yuan). He was also ordered to pay up to $26.87 million (approximately 187 million yuan) in compensation. Previously, the U.S. dismantled a transnational fraud and money laundering ring that used social media or dating apps to build trust with victims, subsequently leading them to fake cryptocurrency trading platforms for so-called 'investments.' Funds from 174 U.S. victims were funneled into accounts of 74 shell companies registered in the U.S., and once the funds were received, they were converted into Tether (USDT).
Reportedly, Su Jingliang played a key role as the 'accountant' in this 'pig-butchering scam' fraud chain. He communicated with employees of Deltec Bank via the encrypted messaging tool Telegram, received funds from U.S.-based shell companies, and directed the bank to quickly convert the incoming U.S. dollar assets into the stablecoin USDT. These funds were then sent to specific cryptocurrency wallets starting with 'TRteo,' and the wallet's funds ultimately flowed to scam hubs in Southeast Asia. (Caixin)
