Nigerians are friendly and I never felt unsafe, yet the country’s deeply rooted chaos leaves society inefficient and poorly ordered, with queue-jumping, dangerous driving, and people crossing multi-lane expressways at will. The logic behind people’s behavior feels fundamentally different and hard to articulate. This may also help explain why people from even more disorderly countries, such as Somalia, often struggle to integrate in the United States, and why religion alone is not the only reason. Abuja’s international terminal, completed in 2018, looks grand and modern, but the people operating it are clearly not trained to the same standard. Boarding involved three separate security checks: one at the airport entrance, one standard screening, and another at the boarding gate, where my bottled water taken from an airside lounge was confiscated. Despite having two lounges, they offer little beyond sugary water and instant coffee, and the place feels strangely empty, almost as if it is on the verge of bankruptcy. Some airport vendors behave rudely and aggressively, and a couple of waiting passengers shouted at me in Mandarin, at times crossing into what felt intrusive. I should add that their Mandarin was actually quite good. Uganda Airlines is relatively new, having only started operations in 2019. The airline currently operates two A330s. One observation stood out to me: during takeoff, cabin crew not only required seats to be fully upright, but also instructed passengers themselves to sit perfectly straight. Business-class passengers were given blankets, yet were told not to use them before takeoff. I do not know whether this was the decision of an individual crew member or an official company policy, but it was the first time I had encountered such a situation. Arriving in Uganda and my first impression of the country was positive. It feels far more normal compared to Nigeria. I was welcomed by Uber. Yes, just like Starlink, wherever Uber exists, it signals a place that functions normally. Immigration was fast and handled professionally. For unclear reasons, Uganda offers visa-free access to passport holders from Cyprus, Ireland, and Malta, while those from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and all other European countries must obtain an e-visa.(Chun)
