This Istanbul house was built in four historical eras... This unassuming building, now a small landmark within Istanbul’s urban landscape, reveals the city’s layered history through its stone and brick. Beneath it lies a Roman cistern, likely part of Constantinople’s late antique water system, designed to protect the city from siege and drought. Its survival under later structures highlights both Roman engineering and centuries of accidental preservation. During the Byzantine era, the space above was reconfigured with brick arches and vaults, typical of commercial or storage buildings connected to nearby forums and ports, supporting the movement of goods, taxes, and people. Following the Ottoman conquest, the structure was adapted rather than demolished: walls were repaired, openings altered, and materials reused, emphasizing function over monumentality. Later Republican-era repairs introduced modern materials and techniques, prioritizing stability over historical accuracy. Each layer embodies a different approach to the past: Roman ambition, Byzantine administration, Ottoman practicality, and modern necessity.(Historic Vids)
