BlockBeats news, January 23, according to Cointelegraph, a winter storm threatening much of the southern United States could lead to Bitcoin miners halting operations. U.S. weather forecasting company AccuWeather stated on Thursday that this 'massive winter storm' could span 1,800 miles, stretching from the far western edge of Texas to the Mid-Atlantic coast, affecting over 60 million people. Historically, when major storms have disrupted power grids, Bitcoin miners have voluntarily reduced activity to alleviate the burden on the grid. During the major winter storm in Texas in 2022, cryptocurrency miners in the state voluntarily scaled back operations. Bitcoin environmental, social, and governance (ESG) researcher Daniel Batten stated that as extreme weather events become more common globally, the need for load balancing in Bitcoin mining will increase, especially as more solar and wind energy is integrated into the grid.
