Bitcoin Core Development Team Promotes Anonymous Developer TheCharlatan to Trusted Keys Maintainer
BlockBeats News: On January 12th, according to Protos, Bitcoin Core maintainers have for the first time increased the number of trusted key holders with submission permissions to the main branch of Bitcoin Core software.
On January 8, 2026, the pseudonymous developer TheCharlatan (also known as "sedated") officially joined, becoming the sixth member after the existing five key holders. The Charlatan will jointly perform the duties of a trusted key holder with Marco Falke, Gloria Zhao, Ryan Ofsky, Hennadii Stepanov, and Ava Chow. Among the 25 members of the GitHub development community for Bitcoin Core software, only these six PGP keys with submission permissions are currently recognized.
In group discussions with other core contributors, at least 20 members agreed that TheCharlatan should be promoted to a trusted key holder. The statement regarding his nomination - 'He is a reliable code reviewer who has made significant contributions in key areas of the code repository, treats code released to users and developers with caution, and has a deep understanding of the technical consensus process' - has not been objected to.
The Charlatan graduated from the University of Zurich with a degree in Computer Science and is a South African developer specializing in software reproducibility and Bitcoin Core verification logic research. In the field of software development, reproducible builds ensure independent verifiability of the conversion path from source code to binary code. Secondly, his work on verification logic continues Carl Dong's contribution in the Bitcoin Core kernel library, aiming to decouple the verification and non verification logic required to determine whether a specific block extends the current optimal workload chain.
