Vitalik: Ethereum itself must pass the 'can be withdrawn at any time' test Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated in an article on the X platform that Ethereum itself must pass the test of "being able to withdraw and leave at any time". The positioning of Ethereum is to become an ideal habitat for various trustless and minimal trust applications, whether in the fields of finance, governance, or other industries. It needs to support applications that are more like "tools" rather than "services" that completely fail once the supplier stops maintenance. Even if some applications do rely on certain functionalities from vendors, Ethereum should minimize this dependency as much as possible and protect users to the greatest extent possible when the dependency fails. But if the underlying protocol itself also relies on continuous updates from a "supplier" (even if this "supplier" is the collaborative process of all core developers) to maintain usability, then building the ideal application mentioned above is impossible. The Ethereum blockchain itself must possess the characteristics that we expect its applications to have. So, Ethereum itself must pass the test of being "withdrawable at any time". This means that Ethereum needs to reach a stage where we can 'solidify it when needed'. We don't need to stop modifying the protocol, but we need to ensure that Ethereum's value proposition no longer strictly relies on any features that have not yet been included in the protocol. Specifically covering the following aspects: fully resistant to quantum computing capabilities, scalable to high-performance architectures, state architectures that can last for decades, generalized account models, reliable gas pricing mechanisms that resist denial of service attacks, proof of stake economic models based on long-term experience, and block building models that resist centralization pressure and ensure resistance to censorship. In an ideal state, we should work hard in the coming years to achieve a stage where almost all future innovations can be implemented through client optimization and reflected in the protocol through parameter changes. Every year, we must achieve at least one of the above goals, preferably multiple. Based on a deep understanding of what is right, doing things well all at once (rather than taking temporary compromises) can maximize Ethereum's technological and social stability in the long run.
