No wonder I got an email about resetting my Instagram password yesterday—17.5 million accounts have been compromised. The leaked information includes: ◦ Full names and usernames ◦ Verified email addresses ◦ Phone numbers ◦ User UIDs ◦ Country and partial location data This is no small-scale breach, and it’s likely we’ll see more social engineering attacks based on this data. For us regular users, here are some key takeaways: ◦ Disable SMS 2FA and switch to an authenticator app like Google Authenticator. If your phone number gets leaked, hackers can trick your carrier and hijack SMS verification codes to access your account. This logic applies to all sensitive apps like Binance, OKX, Telegram, etc.—don’t use SMS verification. ◦ Stop reusing passwords across multiple apps/platforms to avoid linked account risks. If app A experiences a breach (intentional or accidental), hackers could use your email/phone number + password to guess your credentials for app B, leading to even greater losses. ◦ Stay vigilant and build basic security knowledge. 1) Don’t click on password reset links in emails unless you initiated the request yourself; 2) Always verify official domains when visiting websites, and cross-check with trusted friends on —don’t blindly trust Google/Baidu search results; 3) Any website or customer service asking for your 2FA codes or crypto seed phrases is 100% a scam. #StaySafe #CyberSecurity #DataBreach
