How do you determine the big trend? Use longer timeframes? Or market sentiment? Fundamentals? When judging the big trend, don’t guess sentiment or chase news, because most of the information you see is likely delayed. The most direct and simple way is to look at what the price is doing, because whether it’s sentiment or fundamentals, it will all be reflected in the price. First, check if the price is still pushing in one direction. If the market keeps making new highs in segments and pullbacks don’t break previous lows, then the bullish trend is still intact. On the flip side, if it keeps making new lows and rebounds don’t break previous highs, then it’s a bearish trend. Second, see if key levels are being broken. In a bullish trend, if the low of the most recent pullback gets broken, it signals that the trend might be in trouble. In a bearish trend, if the high of the most recent rebound gets broken, it’s the same kind of signal. Third, check if moving averages are still aligned in the same direction over a period of time. Don’t just look at one or two; see if there’s a clear divergence. If the moving averages start to flatten out and tangle together, it’s basically no longer a trending phase.
