I just finished reading Notion CEO @ ivanzhao's ten thousand word article 'Steam, Steel, and the Infinite Mind'. This is definitely one of the most thorough macro level reflections on AI this year.
He pointed out a cruel reality: most of us are still using AI as a 'nuclear power' to push the old era's' waterwheel '.
Why does the current AI look like a large Google search box? What is the true form of the future?
Mirror of history: If you hold a steam engine but only use it to push water wheels. In the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, factory owners only replaced water trucks with steam engines, and the factory structure remained unchanged, resulting in extremely low efficiency improvement. It was not until they realized they could escape the river and redesign the factory layout that the Second Industrial Revolution truly broke out.
Personal evolution: from riding a bicycle to driving a Ferrari. Steve Jobs once said that computers are the 'bicycle of the brain'. But in the era of AI, continuing to 'ride the bike' means losing. Future knowledge workers, especially programmers, are no longer craftsmen who write every line of code themselves. You are a manager and a commander. You command 3-4 AI agents to work day and night. You are no longer the one riding the bike, you are the one driving this supercar.
Evolution at the organizational level: AI is the "steel" of modern companies. In the past, buildings were all made of wood and couldn't be built high enough to collapse (due to the sickness and bureaucracy of large companies). The emergence of steel made skyscrapers possible. AI is the steel of an organization. It can carry exponential communication loads. Humans are no longer the 'load-bearing wall' of information. The decision that used to require three-level approval and a 2-hour meeting will be resolved asynchronously in the next 5 minutes. The size of the company will no longer be limited by the management radius.
Evolution at the economic level: From Florence to Tokyo, the current economy is like Florence: exquisite and human scale, but subject to physical limitations (walking distance). The AI driven future economy is like Tokyo: huge, complex, fast-paced, and although it can be confusing, it has infinite combinations and opportunities. We will evolve from 'small town artisans' to' super urban planners'.
Why is' Human in the loop 'a false proposition? The article mentions the 1865 Red Flag Act: when a car is moving, someone must hold a red flag and walk ahead to clear the way. This is a fear and waste of new technology. The current AI programming teaches us that humans should supervise at the leverage point, rather than jumping into the assembly line to tighten screws. Don't try to run ahead of the AI and raise the red flag, sit in the cab.
Notion's Ambition: Infinite Mind Notion's goal is not to add a Chatbot to your notes. They want to be the 'power grid' and 'steel' of this era. Embedding AI into the texture of documents, databases, and workflows. Turn your company's knowledge base into a 'never resting brain'. This is not science fiction, this is the ultimate productivity tool.
