Two 18-year-old youths were sentenced to a correctional institution for carrying out the scam. Case details reveal that in November last year, a victim went to a currency exchange shop in Tsim Sha Tsui to purchase USDT worth over HK$2 million. Following instructions, the victim handed cash to the two defendants and placed it in the shop's safe. After repeatedly urging for the USDT and receiving nothing, the victim requested a refund, only to discover the cash had disappeared. Investigations uncovered that the safe was separated from a neighboring shop by only a sheet of black paper, with a hidden passage allowing easy access to the cash. The two defendants were arrested while attempting to escape through the passage. Judge Cheng Nim-chi stated that although the two defendants were not the masterminds, they played an indispensable role as "frontline pawns" in the scam. The amount involved was significant, and the act was clearly premeditated. Considering that both were only 18 years old at the time of the crime and had no prior criminal records, sentencing them to a correctional institution rather than direct imprisonment would be more conducive to rehabilitation and reform.
