[Binance Denies Korean Media Reports of Delayed Response to Upbit Hack]
BlockBeats News, December 12, Binance denied Korean media reports claiming it was slow to respond to the hack of South Korea's largest crypto platform, Upbit. A Binance spokesperson stated: 'The Binance security and investigation team identified this incident and immediately took action to assist in freezing the relevant transfers, preventing further loss of funds. Therefore, any claims that we failed to take timely and effective measures are baseless and inaccurate.'
Earlier today, according to Korean media outlet KBS, Binance received a request from South Korean police to freeze the stolen crypto assets from Upbit but ultimately only assisted in freezing a portion of them. After South Korean police and Upbit confirmed on the day of the incident (morning of the 27th) that some of the stolen funds had flowed into Binance, they requested Binance to freeze approximately 470 million KRW worth of Solana tokens. However, Binance, citing the need for further verification of the facts, only froze 17% of the requested amount (approximately 80 million KRW) and delayed the process by about 15 hours before completing it and notifying the authorities.
An Upbit spokesperson stated that they could not comment on the incident reported by KBS but emphasized that local law enforcement is 'actively investigating' to identify the attackers.
On November 27, South Korea's largest crypto exchange, Upbit, disclosed that it had detected abnormal withdrawal activity, with approximately 54 billion KRW (around $36 million) worth of Solana network-related digital assets transferred to unknown external wallet addresses.
