There is an extremely concerning proposal from UK government ministers to ban political donations in crypto in the name of “trust” and “democracy.” The government representatives claim that crypto donations should be banned due to their supposed difficulty to trace, while our industry knows that every transaction is traceable onchain. According to crypto forensics platforms, illicit activity accounts for less than 0.14% of all crypto transactions. On top of that, all political donations over £500 must be disclosed in the UK, and political donations can only be received from individuals on the UK electoral register, UK-registered companies that actually conduct business in the UK, or UK trade unions, political associations, and similar bodies. While advocating for more donation transparency is welcome, there are far better solutions available. Banning political donations in crypto is simply another way to harm real-world use cases of crypto. The real reason for this initiative is to reduce the donations flowing into the Reform political party, which has been successful in raising funds in crypto. Political donations should be technology-neutral, and people should be free to choose whether to donate in fiat or crypto.
