Good question. In the next 3-5 years, there is an opportunity to transform "decentralization" from narrative to verifiable, quantifiable, and directly transformed into breakthroughs in economic security and resistance to attacks. Most likely, it will be concentrated in the following directions with the highest leverage (ranked in descending order of potential): 1. A fully decentralized sorter based on ZK The vast majority of high-performance L1 are using centralized sorters to replace performance. Truly turning the ZK proof network into a chain where anyone running a Raspberry Pi can participate in block generation and proof would directly pull the Nakamoto Coefficient to the level of thousands or even tens of thousands. At present, there is no chain (including Ethereum) that can achieve the main network level of "fully decentralized sorter+100% zK verification+less than 1 second finality" at the same time, but Ethereum is working towards this direction. 2. Historical client diversity+economically provable long-term node decentralization Nowadays, when people talk about decentralization, they only consider the number of verification nodes. However, what truly determines whether ordinary users can run all nodes at home is the cost of synchronization and historical data. If there is an L1 that can solve the problem of "running a full node only requires a few hundred GB or even less, and the synchronization time is less than 1 hour" (such as truly implementing the combination of Verkle Tree+ZK historical proof+Portal network), there is a chance to turn hundreds of thousands or even millions of independent nodes around the world into reality, which will greatly reduce the proportion of Ethereum nodes running on AWS and greatly increase the absolute number. This is true decentralization of geographic distribution and resistance to censorship. 3. Dual Quorum/Cosmos style pluggable security (shared security, but truly verifiable cross chain finality) There are many application chains now, and everyone is taking advantage of the security of Ethereum. If a native L1 emerges in the future, it can allow hundreds of heterogeneous chains to share its validator set simultaneously, while also mathematically proving that 'as long as 2/3 of L1 does not commit any wrongdoing, no chain will be rolled back or reviewed', which can increase the security budget of L1 chains by 10-100 times. If "verifiable shared security" runs, it will directly end the impossible triangle problem of "sacrificing performance for security and decentralization for performance". At present, it has not been seen that 100% mathematically provable shared security can be achieved in heterogeneous execution environments (different VM+different DA layers) while still achieving high performance. 4. Real economic incentives are decentralized (rather than the rich getting richer) Designing an economic model that allows small nodes to truly make money, rather than constantly centralizing the power of validators to the top (such as DHT routing proofs, storage proofs, lightweight client rewards, and even bandwidth proofs), will transform decentralization from a "metric" to true community participation. At present, the difficulty in practice is extremely high, and even BTC and Ethereum have not solved this problem yet. 5. In summary, the most probable breakthrough in decentralization at present is to lower the ZK/STARK proof ability to a level where individuals can truly participate, and to synchronize the decentralization of sequencers and the verifiability of historical data. Whoever first manages to prove that a Raspberry Pi at home can contribute blocks and proof for a TPS of 10000+and a cost of less than 0.001 dollars will win the "deepest moat" in the next round of L1. Other directions, such as better BFT algorithms and faster finality, have value, but they are no longer differences of orders of magnitude. The real 10x~100x gap can only appear in the dimension of "decentralized verifiability".
