According to MA state analysis, about 200K new year-round homes need to be built between 2025 and 2035 to address the housing shortage and reach a “state of housing abundance.”
Even if the population doesn’t grow, it is estimated that 73K homes are needed just for newly formed households (e.g., Millennials, Gen Z).
About 116,000 homes are needed to alleviate overcrowding, doubled-up families, homelessness, and to reach a healthy vacancy rate.
Beyond the total homes needed, there’s also a massive gap in affordable housing: one study estimated 440K more income-restricted affordable units are needed for low-income renters.
Now, consider that there are 400K illegal migrants residing in MA and that @MassGovernor has spent over 3 billion dollars housing and feeding them. It’s not difficult to understand basic supply and demand economics and why we’re in the mess we’re in today. Add in that it takes 2 years just to pull permits for builders and then consider the alternative energy mandates handcuffing them, and you realize we desperately need new leadership - both at the state and federal levels.
