After seeing privacy trending, some people started promoting StarkNet and other zk L2s. However, these zk L2s are not designed for privacy—they're mainly built for scalability. Just because it's zk doesn't mean it inherently supports privacy. The zk L2s specifically designed for privacy are still in development and haven't issued tokens yet.
Here are two examples:
- Aztec @aztecnetwork: The longest-standing privacy-focused L2, which has also developed ZKVM, the Aztec Virtual Machine (AVM). This supports its privacy-first Layer 2 execution environment, allowing for mixed execution of public and private functions. Aztec's AVM is based on SNARKs and focuses more on privacy abstraction and hybrid public/private execution on Ethereum.
- Miden VM @0xMiden: Uses the STARK proof system, prioritizing zk-friendliness over EVM compatibility, and supports the execution of arbitrary programs. Its core focus is also on the privacy contract market, competing in the same space as Aztec. Previously announced $25M in new funding, with expectations of an airdrop.
