Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, is reminding Jamaicans to take steps to protect their health and safety before, during, and after the passage of Tropical Storm Melissa.
The Minister noted that after major weather events, the main health risks tend to be waterborne and food-related illnesses caused by food spoilage, contamination, and unsafe drinking water.
He is advising citizens to:
Stock up on non-perishable foods such as canned items and water crackers.
Store clean drinking water for at least a few days.
Avoid risky behaviour such as venturing outdoors during the storm or attempting roof repairs in the rain.
Keep children indoors and away from floodwaters.
Ensure that senior citizens and persons with chronic illnesses have an adequate supply of medication.
Dr. Tufton also cautioned that avoiding unnecessary accidents and illnesses helps to reduce the burden on hospitals and emergency rooms during the storm period.(Andrew Holness)
