In the 1930s, San Francisco witnessed the concurrent construction of two iconic engineering feats: the Bay Bridge, linking San Francisco to Oakland (begun in 1933, opened November 12, 1936), and the Golden Gate Bridge, crossing the Golden Gate Strait (started January 5, 1933, opened May 27, 1937). These projects employed over 8,000 workers, used millions of rivets, and incorporated advanced methods like suspension bridge cables and cantilevered design, despite the economic hardships of the Great Depression.(Historic Vids)
