In other words, in a Christian framework, no matter how much low status people hate high status people, they should not murder or steal. In Christianity, the guilt complex created is similar to the shame complex from the East but adds a self-policing mechanism. In other words, misdeeds bring shame if others are watching while misdeeds bring guilt because you, yourself, and God are watching. These complexes provide the groundwork for concepts like accountability, judgement and justice. Interestingly, places without either complex (particularly the guilt complex) seem to have a hard time developing into a high-trust society. The reason crime is so low in China is because the shame complex is combined with Big Brother which, together, approximates a guilt complex because Big Brother is watching you instead of God or yourself. Singapore achieves low crime by combining the shame complex with particularly high punishments which corrects for the lack of a self-enforcing mechanism like the one in a guilt complex. The New Testament gives fear-love balance. Fear-heavy parental abstractions lead to nervousness and meekness in the child even if desired behavior is produced. Machiavelli’s ideas on fear and love apply differently to the spiritual world because God cannot be usurped in the same way a human ruler can.
