CZ: In the first year of founding Binance, profits reached 1 billion US dollars, yet he still preached about Bitcoin in prison
Recently, well-known crypto entrepreneur @ APompliano interviewed Binance founder @ cz-binance on a podcast, and we have transcribed the podcast content.
Here are some interesting parts from the interview:
I was born in a remote rural area of China and later moved to a smaller village. Before I could remember, our home had no running water or electricity. When I was in elementary school, I used to study under oil lamps, which had a glass cover. A few years later, our family installed a water pump to pump water. We won't have electricity until a few more years later. Later, we moved to a small city in China and then to Canada.
The city we moved to is Hefei, which has one of China's top universities. On the university campus, I saw paved cement roads for the first time, which were much better than dirt roads. These experiences made me realize that the world is broader than I had imagined. This experience also cultivated my mentality of accepting new things. I have always felt that I am not much different from others, so I have never had a sense of superiority or inferiority. I hope I won't be too arrogant, but also not too pessimistic.
I missed the Internet wave, but when Bitcoin appeared in 2013, I was 35 years old. I realized I couldn't miss this opportunity again, so I quit my job, sold my house, and devoted myself wholeheartedly to the field of encryption.
We officially launched on July 14, 2017, and just six weeks later, the Chinese government announced that it would no longer allow cryptocurrency exchanges to operate. At that time, we were faced with a choice: should we close the company or relocate to another location? At this point, my international experience came into play. I don't think relocation is complicated because I have lived in many countries before. So we decided to relocate 30 members of the team from China to Tokyo and no longer use China as our base.
I remember the first year's profit was about one billion dollars. I think we may be the first company to generate a billion dollar profit from a startup.
Some prisoners have shown interest in learning cryptocurrency and investing. So we managed to send some books about cryptocurrency to the prison. I formed a small study group with them and spent 30 minutes discussing investment knowledge every day. I assign homework to them and they ask questions. There are 9 televisions in the prison, one of which has been converted into a financial channel to monitor Bitcoin prices. This type of study group helped me establish supporters and reduced trouble.
