The current Jamaica Public Service (JPS) all-island licence is set to expire in July 2027.
The people of Jamaica have long been burdened by high electricity costs, and we now have the fiscal space, the economic stability, and the political will to change that.
This is a transformational opportunity. Over the next two years, we will develop a long-term energy plan, informed by expert consultation, to create a system that works better for households and businesses alike. Our focus is on delivering real, sustainable outcomes, not temporary fixes.
I wish to assure the Jamaican people that this decision will not result in any disruption to electricity service. The current licence remains in full force until 2027, and all obligations therein will be upheld.
Our action today is grounded in careful deliberation and expert guidance. It is time to pivot from outdated models and pursue energy sector reforms that deliver tangible benefits for all Jamaicans.
The Holness Administration will not enter into any new arrangement that fails to provide a framework for positive, lasting reform. We are committed to reducing electricity costs once and for all, and to building a power sector that supports Jamaica’s economic growth, environmental goals, and national development.
