Between 2017 and 2025, this administration has delivered 29,681 housing starts through the National Housing Trust (NHT), and if we include 2016, the figure rises to 31,540 units. This averages 3,298 housing starts per year, compared to 2,104 per year under the combined previous administrations from 2008 to 2016. That’s a 57% increase in annual housing starts. Importantly, none of these units have been financed through borrowing. This government has maintained a disciplined approach to fiscal management, ensuring that housing expansion does not increase the national debt. The homes we build today are part of fully developed communities, complete with proper roads, sewage infrastructure, and recreational spaces. Our goal is not just to house people, but to uplift them through well-designed environments that promote dignity, safety, and opportunity. We have rejected the old model, where governments encouraged informal settlement on undeveloped lands, promising to “sort it out later.” That approach led to informality, inefficiency, environmental degradation, and in many cases, criminality. It is a cycle we are determined to end. By contrast, this government is building ahead of demand, ensuring that new housing supply is matched with proper infrastructure and public services. And we are doing so responsibly, without incurring debt, and with a clear commitment to sustainability and national development.
