The core development team of Bitcoin has scheduled the OP-RETURN change for October

According to Protos, the core development team of Bitcoin announced that they will modify the default setting of OP-RETURN in the Core 30 version released in October, raising the data carrier limit from 80 bytes to nearly 4MB. This decision marks a partial victory for the reformists led by Antoine Poinsot in the long-standing dispute with conservatives such as Luke Dashjr.
Although the new version still allows node operators to manually restore smaller data limits, analysis suggests that most nodes will maintain default settings. Conservatives criticize this move as contrary to the original design intention of Bitcoin as a value transfer network, which may turn blockchain into a data storage platform. Reformists believe that moderate expansion can help expand the functionality of Bitcoin and have made compromises that allow for parameter adjustments. This change is expected to affect the on chain data storage ecosystem, but it will not alter the underlying transaction verification mechanism of Bitcoin.
