What are the tips for financing Web3 startup projects?
@Sign is the first entrepreneurial project to receive investment from Sequoia USA, Sequoia China, and Sequoia India simultaneously, and has also received investment from Binance Labs this year. However, with the separation of the Chinese and American brands by Sequoia, this is also unprecedented. Founder @ realyanxin shared some experiences about entrepreneurial financing in the latest episode of @ SeaTalk_ podcast:
What everyone sees is that we have completed the financing and made an announcement, and no one will know until we have raised the money. In fact, in the first year of entrepreneurship, most of the time we cannot raise money. But I think it's like the Battle of Pingjin, we have to surround while fighting. Even if the financing progress is not smooth, we must continue to do well in our products.
Especially when financing is not going smoothly, you need to constantly prove to others that you have the determination and ability to do it, and also constantly update investors on progress. I think this also illustrates the saying 'good things take time', especially like chasing a girl. You can't just ask her if she's your girlfriend from the beginning.
You need to constantly prove yourself, tell her we have an idea, and then tell her a few months later that the idea has become a reality. You show her product updates, user growth, etc., and after a period of time, you have a chance to catch up with her. So, this is a long-term process.
Of course, I think financing varies greatly depending on different rounds and stages. For example, before Rongsequoia, we were still in the seed stage, and at that time, it was more about showcasing our ideas and execution. At that time, we were still in the Pre PMF stage and the company was not profitable. Although we had direction and clear products, we couldn't strongly prove that this product would definitely succeed. So what we did at that time was to constantly showcase ourselves to investors and enhance our influence in the industry.
Why do we still need to raise funds after receiving income in the future? That's because we have strategic needs and want to do bigger. We have a clear understanding of the company and know which aspects are doing well and which ones are not doing well enough. Can we invite some people to help us make up for those shortcomings. So during the Series A financing, we sought out specific investors such as Binance Labs, Amber Group, Mirana Ventures, and others. These investors are not giving them a generic pitch, but rather directly telling them who we are, what we do, what our needs are, what we lack, where we need to cooperate, and proposing specific cooperation suggestions. This is more like discussing specific business, rather than simply showcasing our strengths.
