Timeline:

In November 2023, due to a chip shortage, $MSFT rented chips from $ORCL, mainly A100 and some H100 chips, totaling tens of thousands. The A100 chip was released in May 2020, making it six and a half years old now. It is considered a very old chip.

In June of this year, MSFT and ORCL were negotiating a contract renewal, and at that time, there were news reports about negotiation differences, so the contract was not signed then.

In September of this year, ORCL announced that it had rented or resold old chips that had been used for four years at a 20% premium. This refers to the A100 and H100 chips purchased back then. The 20% premium is speculated to be 20% higher than the price Microsoft offered during negotiations.

In November of this year, tonight MSFT will no longer continue the AI computing power rental contract with ORCL. Not renewing is very reasonable as a large number of A100 chips can no longer meet high-performance computing needs. They can only handle edge model tasks or do some inference.

MSFT and ORCL are, after all, direct competitors.

Now everyone is happy; MSFT's unwanted old chips are being rented out at a higher price. Other neoclouds holding these old A100 chips, which are second-hand and have been used for many years, might find it harder to deal with. However, ORCL is different; as a cloud service provider, it can sub-rent to customers, and when it's really not rentable anymore, it can take them down from the rack and sell them.
