The competition for tokenization is shifting from "who issues assets first" to "who can efficiently execute transactions and settlements first."
Over the past year, tokenization has largely remained in the stages of product issuance and concept validation; in recent months, a series of institutional actions have begun to send new signals: traditional finance is no longer just moving assets onto the blockchain but is attempting to integrate these assets into actual trading, settlement, and cash flow processes.
From Hong Kong allowing public tokenized funds to conduct secondary trading on licensed platforms, to JPMorgan expanding tokenized money market funds to Solana, and Google launching MPC-based security services for institutional digital assets, the focus of tokenization is changing.
What is truly worth noting is not the addition of another blockchain product but that assets are beginning to possess the capability for continuous circulation.
From "On-chain Display" to Real Transactions
In the past, the greatest value of tokenized assets was to allow fund shares, bonds, or stocks to be digitally recorded on the blockchain.
However, if assets can only be issued but cannot be traded, settled, or used as collateral, their value remains limited.
Recent changes are addressing this gap.
The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission has approved public tokenized funds to conduct secondary trading on licensed platforms, allowing relevant products to enter a 24/7 trading environment for the first time; JPMorgan has extended two tokenized money market funds to Solana, aiming to connect traditional cash management products with more on-chain financial environments.
These cases point in the same direction: tokenized assets are starting to move from the issuance phase to the real circulation stage.
Institutions Enter Core Areas
Another change is the shift in participants.
Previously, the main drivers of tokenization were crypto-native projects, but now banks, brokerages, asset management firms, and technology companies are moving into more central roles.
JPMorgan is responsible for fund issuance and asset management, Hong Kong licensed platforms provide trading channels, and Google is venturing into institutional-level digital asset security services to address issues related to private key management and transaction authorization.
This indicates that traditional financial institutions are combining their existing custody, settlement, and risk control capabilities with blockchain infrastructure, rather than simply launching a crypto product.
For institutions, the critical question has shifted from "Should we go on-chain?" to "How do we operate securely on-chain?"
Supporting Infrastructure Determines Implementation Speed
The development of tokenization increasingly relies on supporting infrastructure.
Payment networks, clearing services, custody systems, and digital asset security tools have begun to serve as important supports for asset circulation.
In particular, solutions like MPC, multi-signature authorization, and institutional custody are lowering the barriers for financial institutions to manage on-chain assets; at the same time, payment networks and on-chain settlement capabilities are making it easier for funds to flow across different financial systems.
However, this infrastructure is still in the process of improvement.
In the Next Stage, Should We Focus on Scale or Concept?
Despite the continuous increase in the number of products, tokenization still faces several obstacles to achieving scale.
Interoperability between different public chains, the speed of institutional adoption, secondary market liquidity, and regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions all impact whether assets can truly form trading depth.
Therefore, the most worthwhile metrics to track in the next stage are not how many assets have been announced for on-chain but three more practical indicators: whether the rhythm of tokenized product issuance is sustained, whether institutional collaborations enter real business, and whether on-chain trading volumes and settlement scales can continually expand.
The true watershed moment for tokenization may have already emerged.
In the past, the discussion was about "Can assets go on-chain?" In the future, the key to competition will be whether these assets can genuinely complete transactions, settlements, and cash circulation on-chain.
