Experiencing a 50% drawdown without reducing positions, institutions are redefining the holding period of Bitcoin.

In the past, institutions discussed cryptocurrency assets more in terms of when to enter and when to exit. Now, an increasing number of institutions are starting to discuss another question: what proportion of a portfolio should Bitcoin occupy?

After experiencing drastic fluctuations in the crypto market, the allocation strategies of institutional investors are changing.

On September 23, Bitwise published the first institutional cryptocurrency adoption report. The report interviewed 15 large institutions, including donor funds, public pensions, family offices, investment advisors, sovereign wealth funds, and publicly traded companies.

One noteworthy outcome: During the market's approximately 50% retracement from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the second quarter of 2026, none of the interviewed institutions reduced their crypto asset allocation; some even chose to increase it.

This does not mean that institutions no longer pay attention to price fluctuations; rather, it indicates that some long-term funds have begun to assess crypto assets using longer time horizons instead of purely trading around a cycle of bulls and bears. Despite a 50% retracement, institutions have not reduced their holdings, redefining the holding cycle of Bitcoin

1. From trading opportunity to portfolio allocation, the role of Bitcoin is changing

The Bitwise report shows that the allocation of crypto assets among the interviewed institutions ranges from 0.5% to 13%, with most concentrated between 1% and 2%.

Bitcoin is the asset collectively held by these institutions, as well as the crypto asset that the majority of them established first, holds the largest position, and has been held the longest. In contrast, Ethereum and Solana have also entered some institutional portfolios, but the allocation sizes are relatively small, and the investment cycles and exit conditions are more clearly defined.

This reflects a differentiation in how institutions position different crypto assets.

Bitcoin is increasingly included in discussions of long-term asset allocation, with some institutions comparing it to assets like gold; other mainstream crypto assets need to further prove their application value, sources of return, and long-term competitiveness.

For institutions, the question is no longer just how much Bitcoin can rise in the next cycle, but whether it can serve a certain allocation function outside of traditional assets like stocks, bonds, and gold.

2. ETFs and custody systems make institutional allocation easier

The change in institutional allocation logic is closely linked to the maturation of infrastructure.

In the past, if traditional funds directly held crypto assets, they needed to deal with a series of issues including private key management, selection of trading platforms, asset auditing, compliance, and internal risk control. These requirements increased the cost for institutions to enter the market.

Spot ETFs have changed this situation.

Through familiar securities accounts and fund products, institutions can gain exposure to Bitcoin prices without having to manage on-chain wallets and private keys themselves. At the same time, compliance custody, clearing, and risk management services are gradually improving, making direct ownership of digital assets more operable.

An institutional survey by EY-Parthenon and Coinbase in 2026 covered 351 institutional investment decision-makers. The data shows that 66% of the interviewed institutions have gained exposure to crypto assets through spot ETFs or ETPs, and 81% of respondents prefer to acquire spot exposure through registered products.

This indicates that ETFs are not just a trading tool but are becoming an important gateway for traditional funds to enter the crypto market.

3. Volatility has not disappeared, institutions have just changed their risk management approach

Long-term allocation does not mean ignoring risk.

State Street's digital asset research released on October 6 surveyed 300 global asset management firms, asset owners, and wealth management institutions.

The survey shows that 51% of respondents believe digital assets will become mainstream in the next five years; 35% are already managing or distributing digital assets, and another 28% have established relationships with relevant service providers and infrastructure to conduct business when customer demand arises.

At the same time, institutions' requirements for regulation, cybersecurity, and custody capabilities are also increasing. 69% of respondents listed whether providers have operational experience under a suitable regulatory framework as an important consideration.

This means that institutions are not holding crypto assets simply because volatility is decreasing; rather, they are gradually establishing stricter allocation rules.

Position size, liquidity, custody security, and regulatory compliance are becoming prerequisites for long-term participation.

4. In the next phase, the market needs to observe more than just ETF net inflows

If institutional allocation truly moves from cyclical trading to long-term holding, the indicators worth monitoring will also change.

First, institutional holding disclosures. Focus on the changes in holdings of publicly traded companies, funds, and large asset management institutions to assess whether the allocations are sustainable.

Second, allocation proportions. Compared to single-day ETF fund inflows, actual changes in institutional weightings in portfolios better reflect long-term allocation intentions.

Third, sources of funds. Whether institutions adjust their fund allocation from cash, bonds, or other risk assets will affect the capital relationship between crypto assets and traditional markets.

Fourth, infrastructure development. The continued improvement of custody, clearing, compliance trading, and asset tokenization services will determine the scale and scope of institutional participation.

The crypto market still possesses high volatility, and institutions will not infinitely increase their positions simply because they are optimistic in the long term. Different institutions' investment goals, risk limits, and funding timelines will all affect the final allocation proportions.

But one change is already worth noting: Bitcoin is gradually transitioning from being a trading asset that requires timing to being included in long-term investment discussions among some institutions.

As institutions begin to discuss how much to hold, how long to hold, and how to manage risk, the competitive logic in the crypto market is also changing. In the next phase, beyond price and trading volume, who is holding, how much they are holding, and whether there is continued accumulation may become important indicators for assessing market structure.
