Google begins to extend its cloud computing capabilities into the realm of digital asset security. Following traditional financial institutions accelerating their exploration of blockchain and asset tokenization, tech giants are also starting to compete for the institutional digital asset infrastructure market.
On October 28, Google Cloud announced its digital asset security service Google Multi-Party Compute (MPC), aimed at banks, financial institutions, and other institutional clients, to help securely manage and authorize the transfer of cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets. Currently, the service is in a private preview phase, with several financial institutions participating in testing. Google plans to officially commercialize it in early 2027, but has yet to disclose specific pricing.
It is worth noting that Alphabet’s Google has already begun using this technology to protect its digital assets on the Ethereum and Solana networks; however, the company has not disclosed specific types and scales of the assets.
This means that Google is no longer just providing cloud computing and underlying technical support for the digital asset industry but is beginning to extend into the core aspect of institutional asset security management.
1. What is MPC? Why do institutions need it?
One of the core issues in digital asset custody is private key security.
In traditional wallet models, the private key equals asset control. Once a private key is leaked, stolen, or abused by internal personnel, the related assets may face the risk of being irretrievable. For banks and financial institutions managing large amounts of client assets, the risk of a single private key is particularly unacceptable.
The MPC (Multi-Party Computation) technology chosen by Google attempts to fundamentally change the way private keys are managed.
It does not store the complete private key on a single device but instead uses cryptographic technology to distribute the signing authority across multiple independent parties or computing environments. When a transaction is initiated, the participants who meet the preset conditions collaboratively complete the signature without needing to recombine the full private key at any location.
For example, a 2-of-3 mechanism can require at least two out of three participants to jointly authorize a transaction. Even if one environment is attacked, the attacker cannot transfer assets simply based on this key fragment.
Google also integrates trading rules and key recovery capabilities into the service, allowing institutions to set transaction limits, restrict target addresses, and set approval requirements for fund transfers.
This design is closer to the multi-level authorization and internal risk control processes familiar to traditional financial institutions.
2. Why is Google choosing to enter now?
Google's current layout is driven by the changing demand for blockchain infrastructure from financial institutions.
In the past, institutional participation in the crypto market was mainly focused on trading, investing, and custodial services for Bitcoin. As asset tokenization, on-chain settlement, and digital asset payments gradually develop, financial institutions need to handle not only cryptocurrencies but also tokenized funds, securities, and other on-chain assets.
These services not only require blockchains to handle transactions but also that the underlying systems possess strict permissions management, fund approval, and security audit capabilities.
Google has previously provided key management services such as Cloud KMS and Cloud HSM and released a technical guide in 2023 on building a digital asset MPC system using Confidential Space.
The launch of a dedicated MPC service is equivalent to packaging previously client-integrated technical capabilities further into an institution-focused product.
Rich Widmann, head of Google Cloud’s digital asset strategy, stated that the adoption of digital assets and asset tokenization is in an important development stage, and regulated financial institutions need scalable infrastructure to protect client assets.
From a commercial perspective, Google hopes to extend its cloud computing, security technology, and financial institution customer resources into the digital asset management market.
3. Tech giants will compete with specialized custodial service providers
Google's entry into this market also implies that new competitors will emerge in the field of institutional digital asset security.
Currently, specialized service providers such as Fireblocks, Fordefi, and BitGo have already provided institutions with digital asset custody, security management, and transaction authorization infrastructures.
Compared to these native digital asset service providers, Google’s advantages may lie in its cloud computing infrastructure, security technology accumulation, and existing banking customer relationships.
Google also emphasizes that institutions can distribute key fragments across their own hardware, Google Cloud, and other cloud service environments, rather than handing over complete control to a single vendor.
However, Google is not the first company to adopt MPC technology, and the market is not empty. Ultimately, whether institutions choose Google depends on the system's security, operational efficiency, service costs, and compatibility with existing financial systems.
Additionally, MPC does not guarantee absolute asset security. Key fragment management, approval rights configuration, internal personnel operations, and recovery mechanisms can still become sources of risk. Institutions need to independently assess the vendor's technical and operational capabilities.
4. Scheduled for early 2027 commercial use, what to watch next?
Currently, Google MPC is still in the private preview phase, and the list of testing institutions, specific pricing standards, and official commercialization timeline have not yet been fully disclosed.
There are three directions worth paying attention to next:
- Institutional adoption: Which banks and financial institutions participate in testing and whether they will convert to long-term clients after official commercialization.
- Support range: The progress of service support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other blockchain networks, as well as tokenized asset management capabilities.
- Commercialization progress: Whether it can be launched as planned in early 2027, and how the actual service cost and market competitiveness will be.
Google's launch of the MPC service does not mean it has become a traditional custodial institution for crypto assets. More accurately, it is providing a set of technical infrastructure to help financial institutions manage keys, control transaction permissions, and protect digital assets.
As banks begin to issue and manage on-chain assets, private key security is no longer just a problem for the crypto industry but will become part of financial infrastructure. Google’s arrival reflects that the competition in the digital asset market is extending from trading platforms and blockchain networks to custody, security, and institutional-level services.
