An organization that once represented the venture capital wave of the cryptocurrency industry is redefining what it wants to invest in.
On October 22, Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) announced that its crypto investment business brand a16z Crypto would be renamed a16z Frontier, expanding its investment scope from crypto startups to a broader range of frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence, new networks, and technologies that may give rise to entirely new markets.
This adjustment does not mean that a16z will exit the crypto space. The firm stated that it will continue to invest in crypto projects and support reasonable crypto regulation. The change is that blockchain is no longer the only label used to delineate investment boundaries.
Why remove “Crypto” from the name?
a16z Crypto has raised nearly 10 billion dollars through five funds since its launch in 2018, investing in representative projects of the crypto industry such as Coinbase and Uniswap.
During the rapid growth phase of the crypto market, establishing a Crypto fund made clear sense: to seek entrepreneurial opportunities in blockchain infrastructure, trading platforms, decentralized finance, and new digital asset domains.
However, as blockchain gradually enters traditional finance and fintech products, the technological boundaries are becoming blurred. Should a fintech company that uses blockchain for settlements be classified as a crypto company or as a financial infrastructure company? Defining investment direction solely based on underlying technology has increasingly struggled to cover actual business.
a16z managing partner Chris Dixon explained in the announcement that this adjustment is about expanding the investment scope, not abandoning the original domain. The organization hopes to invest in technology companies that may take years to mature but have the potential to create entirely new markets.
AI and Crypto are competing for the same future scenarios
Another main thread of this adjustment is artificial intelligence.
a16z believes that advancements in AI models and infrastructure are driving the emergence of new generations of products and services. At the same time, blockchain provides programmable value transfer capabilities that could support transactions between machines, economic incentives for new networks, and both centralized and decentralized financial services.
These two technologies do not necessarily substitute for each other. AI can take on decision-making, automation, and task execution, while blockchain could offer asset, payment, and settlement mechanisms. Some future entrepreneurial projects may utilize both, rather than falling into a single technology track.
For venture capital, this means that investment opportunities could extend from traditional token projects, trading platforms, and public chain infrastructure to AI agents, economic activities between machines, and new digital services.
Is this a decline of the crypto industry or an expansion of investment boundaries?
The brand adjustment also reflects that crypto venture capital is seeking new growth directions. TechCrunch reported that a16z Crypto has raised nearly 10 billion dollars, but in recent years, industry investors have raised more questions about the commercial value and long-term growth potential of some crypto applications.
However, merely renaming does not determine how much crypto investment the firm is reducing. a16z has not announced a complete exit from the crypto space, nor has it disclosed a new allocation of investment ratios in this announcement.
What is truly worth noting is how future capital will be allocated: whether traditional blockchain infrastructure can still attract significant funding, whether sustainable business models can emerge in the cross-field of AI and Crypto, and how the foundation will evaluate startups no longer limited by a single technology label.
The signal conveyed by this adjustment from a16z is that venture capital is beginning to pay more attention to what market the technology ultimately creates, rather than which technology the startup is using. For crypto entrepreneurs, this may broaden the potential competitive range and also means that projects need to demonstrate not only technological innovation but also genuine demand, business models, and long-term value.
