Today's Observation:
In Q3 FY2026, Meta's revenue reached $64.601 billion, a year-on-year increase of 26%, exceeding the market expectation of approximately $63.34 billion. Advertising revenue grew 26% year-on-year to $63.061 billion, still contributing nearly 98% of the company's total revenue. The number of advertisement displays increased by 10%, and the average ad price rose by 14%, indicating that Meta's growth this quarter is attributed to both enhanced user engagement and improved advertising monetization efficiency.
Meta is forming two different stages for AI commercialization. The first is the advertisement AI that has already generated returns. Recommendation algorithms, ad ranking, generative ad materials, and automated delivery tools are enhancing content engagement and advertising conversion efficiency, driving simultaneous growth in ad displays and unit prices. Meta has clearly stated that AI investments have brought significant incremental revenue to the advertising business through higher user engagement, better content recommendations, and more efficient monetization.
The second path is the personal AI product Muse, which is still in the investment phase. About six weeks after Muse launched in the United States and Canada, over 10 million accounts have been created, with around 25% of users using it on any given day. This retention level indicates that Muse is establishing initial usage habits in scenarios such as shopping, schedule management, productivity, and content creation.

MSX View:
Currently, Meta's advertising fundamentals remain very strong. Ad displays increased by 10%, and average ad prices rose by 14%, jointly driving a 26% increase in advertising revenue. The growth in displays indicates that platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp still have room to expand content consumption and advertising display space; the increase in ad prices suggests advertisers are willing to pay higher prices for the conversion effectiveness that Meta provides.
The value of AI in this system is not to charge users directly, but to improve the efficiency of each content recommendation and ad display. Recommendation models can increase user retention time, ad models can better match consumers, and generative tools reduce the costs for advertisers to create images and video materials. As long as these tools can enhance the return on ad investment, Meta can continue to increase revenue without noticeably raising ad density.
Muse represents Meta's longer-term, and more uncertain, second growth curve. Gaining over 10 million accounts in about six weeks since launch, with approximately one-fourth of the registered users using it on any given day, indicates that Meta has the capability to rapidly distribute new AI products to large-scale consumers. This distribution capability stems from the global social network built by Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, which is an advantage that independent AI startups find difficult to replicate.
Capital expenditure is another significant change this quarter. Meta's capital expenditures and principal payments for financing leases reached $34.906 billion in a single quarter, surpassing the operating cash flow of $32.786 billion, leading to a quarterly free cash flow drop to negative $2.120 billion. The shift to negative free cash flow does not indicate that Meta has lost its internal financing capability: the company's free cash flow for the first nine months remained positive at $11.049 billion, with $82.45 billion in cash and marketable securities at the end of the quarter. However, it does demonstrate that the construction of AI infrastructure is significantly increasing capital demand.
If AI continues to drive advertising revenue growth, and Muse's reasoning costs decline rapidly, Meta may use the cash flow from its mature ad business to incubate new personal AI entry points. Conversely, if capital expenditures and depreciation continue to rise, while Muse struggles to establish a revenue model, the company's free cash flow and profit margins will face longer-term pressure.
Thus, this earnings report verifies that Meta has achieved AI returns in its advertising business, and it also proves that the company possesses the ability to quickly promote consumer-grade AI products. The next phase that needs to be validated is whether Muse can transition from user scale to commercial scale, and how much new advertising revenue, operating profit, and free cash flow can ultimately be generated for every additional dollar of AI capital investment.
The advertising business has already provided a funding foundation for AI investments. Meta's next core task is to transform AI from a tool that enhances the efficiency of existing businesses into a new platform that can independently generate revenue.
